D Co, Buffalo Highlanders Ready for 175th Event in April

D” Company – Buffalo City Guard - Gordon Highlanders is celebrating our 175th Anniversary ( 1837 – 2012 ). One of Five Companies formed in 1837 for the defense of Buffalo and Western New York, “D” Company was comprised of Scots or those of Scottish decent. In the 1860′s when the State Militia Laws change “D” Company formed into a Military Society. In 1890, with many members formally from the 92nd Regiment of Foot, The Gordon Highlanders, a Drum and Pipe Band was formed and continues on to this day. Membership boasts of two United States Presidents and many local and Nation Heroes. Today’s Company consisting of a Color Guard, Drums and Pipes, carry on Scottish traditions while performing in area Parades and at local concerts in and around Western New York and Canada.

To Celebrate we are having an Anniversary Dance on Saturday, April 28, 2012, tickets are $20 before Monday, April 23, 2012, this is for Reserved Seating, after this dated if tickets are still available they will be sold at the door for $25, No Guarantees. The event takes place at the Colonel John B Weber VFW Post 898, 2909 South Park Ave., Lackawana, NY, Doors open at 6 PM and the festivities continue until Midnight. We have DJ for listening and dancing and there will be performances by the Gordons. There is Free Beer, Wine, Pop, Coffee, Tea and $1.00 well drinks. A Chinese Auction a 50/50 Split and a Whiskey Basket Raffle will take place. Guests may bring snacks and finger foods, no food is sold at the Post. Clan Awards and NOMINATIONS and Scholarship Applications Due

It is that time of year when nominations for clan recognition should be sent through your Regional Commissioner to the Society President, Larry Henderson. There is no formal format, but please fully identify the individual and the reason(s) they should receive an award. Submission can be sent via email or US Postal service.

Applications for youth scholarships should be sent to your Regional Commissioner, seeking his/her nomination.

A current photo of the individual applicant or nominee is requested with both Awards submissions and Scholarship applications.

Information should be sent to arrive at the Regional Commissioner before Feb 26, 2012

Erica Milner Takes 1st Place Trophy

HENDERSONS PARTICIPATE IN SCOTTISH HERITAGE GROUNDBREAKING

On New Years’ Day, 2012, a groundbreaking ceremony took place to construct a new cultural center at Rural Hill near Charlotte, NC. Its location is the site of the annual Loch Norman Highland Games each April. Nearly 200 people were attending the annual First Footin’ event, with the traditional walk around the property, a 5mile Run, and an outdoor lunch of Stone Soup. At the groundbreaking the Rev. Fred Sanford, Henderson Chaplain, gave a reading of Robert Burns’ poem “New Years Day,” relating the occasion to a lament of the past and a strive for the future. Other Hendersons present were Peggy Sanford (Clan Recording Secretary), L.D. Bass, Jr. (Rural Hill Board Member), David R. and Kari Henderson, Tim and Gwynn Lindler, John Misenheimer (cousin of NW Pacific Commissioner Ellen Bentley), and prospective members Kelly and Peggy Franklin. The center will be an activities building, a memorial gift from the late Rural Hill farm (Davidson Plantation) resident May Davidson, who always celebrated her Scots heritage. A mild, sunny day added to the joyful spirit of all present.

Clan Henderson Bodyguards Wanted

The position of bodyguard is an important aspect of the Clan Henderson Society. If you are a male, 18 years old or more, and own a kilt (preferablly in the Henderson Tartan) then you MIGHT qualify. Joe Henderson, Clan Henderson Society Regional Commissioner, South Pacific Region announced the Hendersons will NOT have a tent at the 19th Annual Scottish Festival and Games, held in Long Beach, CA on Feb 18-19, 2012. HOWEVER, all Henderson’s are encouraged to attend. Spanish Translator

Background: The new Clan Henderson web-site has a link to a potential affiliate in Uruguay.

Duties: A disclaimer paragraph needs to be put into the Spanish Language. This is a one time requirement. The paragraph requiring translation is:

“Unfortunately, an affiliation program has not yet been established in your Country. If you would like to help organize an affiliation program, please contact the President of the Clan Henderson Society for more details. Meanwhile, we invite you to consider joining one of the active Clan Henderson Society affiliations (USA or Canada), until such time as your country’s affiliation program is up and running.”

Qualifications: Understanding of Spanish vernacular, ideally South American or Uruguay based. Ability to provide a written Spanish paragraph in MS Word format. Ability to communicate via email.

North East Regional Commissioner

Background: The Clan Henderson Society needs a Commissioner for CHS Region “North East”. This includes the States: NY, CT, MA, NH, VT and Maine. This region potentially supports approximately sixteen(16) Highland Games and Gatherings annually.

Duties: The Commissioner (RC) is the primary Society Leader/Representative for the Region. The RC seeks out and gathers support to sustain membership and further the goals and objectives of the Society. The RC puts together a management team to support activities in the Region, prepares and manages an annual budget, supports the Clan Awards and Scholarship Programs, supports youth programs and helps develop leadership within the Society. The RC serves at the pleasure of the CHS President.

Candidate Qualifications: Candidates should have experience convening Highland games. Also, desired is an ability to communicate well, a proactive attitude and a willingness to help further the goals and objectives of the Clan Henderson Society. Management/Leadership experience is an important plus and a successful candidate should be able to write short articles and have a familiarity with Excel spreadsheets. Candidates are expected to be able to communicate by email and on the internet and should have read the Clan Manual, Part B, before applying for the position.
