Benefits of DNA Testing
Here are some common situations where DNA testing might be beneficial for you:
Scenario 1:
A modern Henderson male traces his ancestors back to the town of XYZ in Tennessee but can go no further. He hits a brick wall. In the Tennessee town of XYZ, there is another Henderson family who can trace their lineage back to Pennsylvania and before that into the province of Ulster, Northern Ireland. Even though they suspect a relationship, these two Henderson families have no paper connection.
The two Henderson families agree to submit DNA samples to the Henderson DNA Project for the purpose of determining their relationship.
In a successful scenario, DNA test results of the two families will show an exact 67 marker match, leaving virtually no doubt that the two DNA signatures are related and give reason to believe that the relationship tracks back a certain number of generations. As a result, the two Henderson families share a wealth of genealogy information with each other and continue working together to trace their ancestry even further back in time.
Scenario 2:
A modern Henderson male submits a DNA test sample for the purpose of identifying his ancestry root of origin. Test results determine the genetic population of his direct male line based on placement of his DNA signature within one of the 18 Y-chromosome Haplogroups on the phylogenic tree of Homo sapiens. Once identified, the history and migration of that haplogroup will apply to the modern Henderson male.
Scenario 3:
A modern Henderson male submits a DNA sample to learn if he is related to one of the five original root families of the surname Henderson in Scotland or Ireland. Using a baseline of DNA samples traced back to the five root families, this modern Henderson male will be able to confirm which of the five root families matches his DNA signature. Note: In some cases the results will be inconclusive due to various reasons including nonpaternal events, surname assumptions or unusual mutations.
