When you order a DNA test, you will receive a genetic test kit consisting of a cheek scraper and a collection tube. In about five minutes, you will be able to read the instructions and perform a painless cheek scraping. The effect of using the scraper is about the same as brushing your cheek with a soft bristle toothbrush.
Follow the instructions and mail back your sample along with a disclosure form. In a few weeks you will be notified of the results by individual email.
If you signed the disclosure form included in your kit, your results will appear with other Henderson DNA test participants on the Clan Henderson website.
Types of Tests
Y-DNA Test – Just as surnames are passed down from fathers to sons, the Y-chromosome is passed from father to son, therefore the Y-DNA test is for males only. The various marker tests available for males include Y-DNA12, Y-DNA25, Y-DNA37, and the highest Y-DNA67 marker test. The higher the number of markers, the greater accuracy in determining the probabilities associated with the time to a Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA). In other words, the higher marker test will point to a more recent ancestor than will a lower marker test.
MtDNA Test – Females do not carry their father’s Y-DNA and they may acquire a new surname usually by way of marriage. Females who would like to check their direct paternal line can have a male relative with the Henderson surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNA or the mtDNAPlus test to confirm their direct maternal line.
