10th Annual St. Louis Scottish Games & Cultural Festival
ST. LOUIS, Mo. June 8, 2012: The sound of bagpipes, the swirl of tartan, and the pageantry of the Scottish highlands will be on display once again when the 10th Annual St. Louis Scottish Games & Cultural Festival returns September 28 and 29 in Forest Park, south of the Missouri History Museum, next to the Dwight Davis Memorial Tennis Center.
“We’re very excited to be returning to Forest Park,” said Dr. James McLaren, chairman of St. Louis Scottish Games. “We have earned a reputation as one of the best Scottish events in the country, and a great family event that brings a wee bit of Scotland into the Midwest for everyone to enjoy.”
The event will kick off on Friday evening, September 28, at dusk, with a torchlight ceremony and “calling” of the Scottish clans, followed by an exciting folk concert featuring Ed Miller and John Taylor. Food and beverages will also be available.
The gates will open on Saturday at 8:30 a.m., and the events will include Scottish heavy athletics, pipebands, Highland dancing, birds of prey, Highland cattle, children’s activities and storytelling (and “Nessie”), sheepdog herding demonstrations, sword fighting displays, as well as Scottish foods, crafts and vendors.
Musical performers will include:
- Scottish folk musician Ed Miller, who also hosts a folk music program on NPR in Austin, Texas;
- Renowned Scottish-born fiddler John Taylor;
- vocalist and musician Jil Chambless; and
- Scooter Muse, a renowned guitar and banjo musician, and a “Master Folks Artist” with the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
Sponsors include the all-volunteer St. Louis Scottish Games team, with support from Logan College of Chiropractic, Schlafly Brewing Company, the Employees Community Fund of Boeing Company, the St. Andrew Society of Greater St. Louis, Missouri Tartan Day, and the St. Louis Caledonian Pipe Band.
The host hotel for the event is the recently renovated Cheshire Inn.
